Alignment Practice for Long Game

Alignment and being able to switch and adjust to a new target is “vital” in producing consistent shot direction “how many times have you struck a perfect shot and it’s finished nowhere near your target?” I see too many people practising on the range with no real target in mind. This is detrimental to your overall performance on the course, simply because in a round of golf you will always have a target or area were you need the ball to go or land.

There may obviously be other faults that will cause inconsistency, but as a coach “alignment” is always the first fundamental you check. I have devised a simple routine to improve this particular area.

Round the clock

  1. Make sure your feet, knees, hips and shoulders are all parallel to your ball to target line. You can use clubs laid down on the ground to help reference this position.
  2. By using the pylons on the side and the back of the range pick out as many as your bay will allow you to, working in a half circle
  3. Set yourself a challenge starting from the left or right side, work your way round in a half circle bearing in mind you can not move onto the next target unless your ball has been hit at the selected target

For assessment purposes keep a record of how many shots it takes you to complete one target and the whole task. Also mix it up a little by not just using the same club all the time, but trying to complete the task with each club in the bag or changing clubs for every shot.
